Steve Palmer's RBC Heritage preview
Rory McIlroy has opted out of the RBC Heritage this week, sensibly basking in the warm glow of his Grand Slam heroics and set to visit Northern Ireland to celebrate with his parents.
The Heritage is a PGA Tour Signature Event but Hideki Matsuyama is also skipping the South Carolina gathering, turning his nose up at a $20m prize purse and getting some post-Masters rest instead. Scottie Scheffler will not have to worry about the world number two or world number six as he bids to defend his Heritage title.
Scheffler has played seven tournaments without winning this year, struggling to put all departments of his game together, and can be resisted at short odds.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Sungjae Im 40-1
South Korean ace Sungjae Im bounced back to form in the Masters last week, closing with a 69 for a share of fifth place, and that huge confidence boost can be followed by RBC Heritage glory.
Im's short-game was particularly sharp at the Masters. He was holing chips from all corners of Augusta National and that skill is crucial to success around the small greens of the Harbour Town Links. Strong scrambling is required in the Heritage and Im seems well equipped for the task.
The two-time PGA Tour champion started 2025 well, with third place in The Sentry followed by fourth in the Farmers Insurance Open, before a quiet spell when he struggled with his irons. The Augusta revival should spark this streaky player into life for a profitable spring.
Im finished 13th at Harbour Town in 2021, 21st in 2022, then raised his game further when the Heritage became a Signature Event, finishing seventh in 2023 and 12th last year, despite arriving following a missed cut at Augusta. Harbour Town is a great fit for a player who does not hit his ball far, but is typically neat and tidy.
Next best bet
Daniel Berger 45-1
Fully-fit Floridian Daniel Berger is loving life waking up pain-free every day and is performing better than ever. Harbour Town plays to his strengths and the accurate 32-year-old can be expected to be in the thick of things throughout.
The four-time PGA Tour champion last triumphed in 2021 – by the coast in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am at a similar layout to this week's. Loads of injury issues have blighted him since, but last week's share of 21st place in the Masters underlined the progress he has made lately.
Berger closed with a 69 at Augusta and has headed to Hilton Head full of belief. He has posted seven top-20s from October onwards, including second place by the coast in the RSM Classic. He was second in the Phoenix Open, 20th at Sawgrass last month, and looks set to take advantage of some potentially sluggish market principals this week.
A few members of the elite may switch off this week in the wake of a mentally gruelling Masters, but Berger is determined to get back to winning ways. He was third in the 2020 Heritage, 13th in 2021 and 21st in 2022, so will be excited about his return with a $3.6m first prize up for grabs.
Other selection
Bud Cauley 75-1
The golfing renaissance of Bud Cauley has been a joy to watch this year. The Floridian has suffered loads of injury problems, most caused from a near-fatal car crash in 2018 which left him with five broken ribs, a broken leg and a collapsed lung. It has been a long battle back and Cauley carries great perspective on the golf course.
Formerly one of the best young players in America, Cauley resumed his professional career at the start of last year on the Korn Ferry Tour, easing his way back on to the main circuit. He finished fifth in the Sanderson Farms Championship in October and in recent weeks has been right back to his best.
Sixth place in the Players Championship was followed by fourth spot in the Valspar, then fifth in the Texas Open. His PGA Tour debut came in the 2010 Heritage and his maiden PGA Tour title may come at the age of 35 in the same event on Sunday. He won on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2014.
