Steve Palmer's Travelers Championship preview
The PGA Tour have scheduled a Signature Event immediately after the US Open, so 63 players have dusted themselves down from the rigours of Oakmont and headed to the much easier TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship.
Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion, but a best price of 3-1 can be left alone given how badly he putted at Oakmont. A functioning flat-stick is almost essential for success at River Highlands. Rory McIlroy has been struggling for motivation in the wake of his Masters victory, so digging deeper in the betting is the preferred course of action.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Ludvig Aberg 25-1
Prior to missing the cut by a shot in the US Open, Ludvig Aberg fired a closing 66 in the Memorial, then finished 13th in the Canadian Open. There was no disgrace in rounds of 72 and 76 at Oakmont and he can turn that weekend off into a positive.
Players who had 72 holes at soggy Oakmont, the most difficult course on the US Open rota, must be drained. Aberg, fresh as a daisy in comparison, has a similar profile to the last three Travelers champions and can churn out greens in regulation at River Highlands.
Aberg finished 24th on his Travelers debut in 2023 when ranked 760th in the world, then 27th last year the week after contending on his US Open debut. He led at the halfway stage at Pinehurst, finishing 12th, arriving jaded at the Travelers. This time he should be hungry for competition.
Next best bet
Patrick Cantlay 25-1
Rounds of 76 and 72 meant Patrick Cantlay missed the US Open cut by a shot, and a triple-bogey at the seventh hole of round one did most of the damage. He was seven over par through 16 holes of round one and only eight over par through 36 holes.
Cantlay has been able to freshen up for one of his favourite courses on the PGA Tour. He carded a second-round 60 to lead the Travelers as an amateur on debut in 2011 and his last seven visits as a professional have yielded form figures of 15-15-11-13-13-4-5. He has been banking healthy cheques in Signature Events this season.
Other selection
Bud Cauley 90-1
Cantlay and Bud Cauley tied 24th in the 2011 Travelers, then Cauley finished 11th in the 2014 edition. A near-fatal car crash stalled Cauley's career, but he opened with a 69 in the 2020 Travelers before withdrawing because of Covid. He lost 2021, 2022 and 2023 to injury but returned last year, finishing fifth in the Sanderson Farms Championship.
This year Cauley has followed up with fifth place at Sawgrass, fourth in the Valspar, fifth in the Texas Open and third at Colonial last month. Like Aberg and Cantlay, he can follow a narrow missed cut in the US Open by contending at River Highlands.

- Weather forecast Sunny and warm for the most part. Moderate afternoon breezes on Thursday and Friday, but otherwise calm
- Type of player suited to the challenge All types of player have succeeded at this venue – short-hitters such as Olin Browne, Woody Austin, Ken Duke, Kevin Streelman, Russell Knox and Chez Reavie have won on the same terrain as bombers Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. Hitting plenty of greens and putting well is the route to success. Birdies aplenty are up for grabs, so weak putters will be left behind
