Steve Palmer's Corales Puntacana Championship preview

The low-grade Corales Puntacana Championship is an opportunity for players who have failed to qualify for the RBC Heritage. Ben Griffin is first alternate for the Heritage, so it remains to be seen whether he takes his place at Corales or gets a late call-up for the more prestigious gathering after a Heritage withdrawal.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Pierceson Coody 40-1

Three-time Korn Ferry Tour champion, Pierceson Coody, can make a PGA Tour breakthrough on Sunday. The 25-year-old looks ready to make an impact at a venue which suits.

One of Coody's KFT successes came in Panama, which is not far from the Dominican Republic, and his record in tropical locations is excellent.

Coody was in terrible form when he arrived for his Corales debut last year, struggling to make cuts anywhere and suffering with some injury niggles, but he fell in love with this assignment, opened with a pair of 67s and eventually finished 18th.

That performance turned Coody's season around and he followed up with fifth place at Colonial and second place in the ISCO Championship. He finished 12th in the Bermuda Championship in November at another tropical island location, seventh in The Bahamas on the KFT in January at another holiday hotspot, then ninth in Panama before second place in another KFT event.

Next best bet

Matt Wallace 30-1

The 2023 Corales champion was Matt Wallace, who fended off Nicolai Hojgaard to make a PGA Tour breakthrough. Wallace is a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, his latest success coming in the European Masters last year.

Wallace has Ryder Cup aspirations and needs a big spring. He has been in decent nick, finishing 26th in the Puerto Rico Open, missing a couple of PGA Tour cuts on the mark, then claiming 26th spot again in the Texas Open last time out.

Wallace was superb on the DPWT in the closing months of last year. A return to a happy hunting ground this week could kickstart his 2025 campaign.

Other selections

Matti Schmid 45-1
Aldrich Potgieter 45-1

German 27-year-old Matti Schmid was an excellent amateur who impressed on the DPWT before turning his attention to the States. He has competed mainly on the PGA Tour over the last three years, particularly enjoying low-grade gatherings on tropical islands like this one.

Schmid was third in the 2023 Bermuda Championship, tenth and sixth in the Puerto Rico Open over the last two years, and 11th in the Corales Puntacana last year. Coody, Schmid and Aldrich Potgieter appear three lively maidens this week.

Potgieter was a playoff loser in the Mexico Open at the end of February. He won the Amateur Championship in 2022, then on the Korn Ferry Tour in The Bahamas at the start of last year. The power-packed South African loves The Bahamas and could fall in love with the Dominican Republic this week.

Potgieter is a 20-year-old finding his feet in the pro ranks. This huge talent was second in the Nedbank Challenge on the DPWT at the end of last year, then 15th in the Farmers Insurance Open in January.
