Betting preview

The Outlaw Tour's beefed-up 2020 season comes to an end in Arizona this week with Brady Calkins favourite to take the Lone Tree Classic.

The Classic takes place over three rounds at Lone Tree Golf Club, a 7,007-yard par-71 track which staged a 36-hole Outlaw event in February - won by Matt Gurska, who is not taking part this week.

Calkins has an obvious chance. A prolific winner on the Dakotas Tour, he finished in a tie for third behind Zach Smith at the Scottsdale AZ Open recently but there's little juice in his price and he can be taken on.

Tyler Weworski finished fourth behind Jon Trasamar at the Southern Dunes Classic last week and should again play his part, while Alistair Docherty is likely to go well. But by far the most interesting contender is amateur star Sahith Theegala.

Theegala graduates from California's Pepperdine University this summer following a stellar college career during which he won four times in the last 12 months.

His trophy count includes the Australian Master of the Amateurs, won by Major champion Jason Day in 2006, and he received the Haskins award last month.

The Haskins, awarded to the most outstanding college golfer in the United States each year, has been won by numerous future Major champions including Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and Justin Thomas.

The award does not guarantee success but, of the last ten recipients, five have won PGA Tour events including 2019 winner Matthew Wolff.

By virtue of winning the Haskins, Theegala has been dubbed golf's next big thing and could prove far too good for the Lone Tree field if ready to go.

Bookmakers are struggling to weigh up his chances - some make him their joint-favourite while others are prepared to lay at bigger odds - but anything at a double-figure price about a player of this potential is worth taking.
