Third-round preview

Harris English was a 66-1 chance for the Mayakoba Classic with Hills in their opening show on Monday morning and slowly but surely became the subject of a significant gamble, teeing off on Thursday at half that price.

The 2013 Mayakoba champion, who has started the season in a rich vein on form, is in position to justify the faith of the punting community, having assumed a one-shot lead through two rounds at El Camaleon, Mexico.

The weather-delayed event is almost certainly heading for a Monday finish. Players will go off in threeballs for round three and will not be re-grouped for the final round, PGA Tour officials planning to complete as much of the tournament as possible on Sunday. With only 11 hours of daylight available, though, getting the job done will be tough, and a few closing holes on Monday seems likely.

English is a general 9-4 chance for Mayakoba glory. Both his PGA Tour victories came in 2013, including a four-shot success at El Camaleon in a week which included weather delays. The 30-year-old has rediscovered his long-game form in the last few months and is hitting his ball well enough to land a long overdue third Tour title.

English is at 13 under par, with Vaughn Taylor alone in second, and Brendon Todd, who won the Bermuda Championship last time out, in third place. Todd, last year's runner-up Danny Lee (three behind), talented youngster Robby Shelton (three) and 2016 champion Pat Perez (four) are arguably the biggest threats to the leader.

Racing Post Sport followers are on English at 40-1 ante-post and have no need to get further involved in the outright market at this stage. He is scheduled to tee off at 2.10pm UK and Ireland time, alongside Taylor and Todd in the final match.

Abraham Ancer endured a hugely disappointing Saturday, but full focus is guaranteed for 72 holes from the Mexican in his home event, and he should be trusted to bounce back by winning his 12.10pm third-round threeball against Brice Garnett and Luke Donald.
