LPGA Chevron Championship preview

The women's Major season kicks off this week with The Chevron Championship and the 132-player field could be in for a difficult couple of days in Texas with heavy rain and strong winds set to make rounds one and two a battle of resilience.

Early forecasts suggest there is a strong chance of thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday, causing possible delays and rescheduled tee times, so the stellar field better get strapped in for tough golf on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at The Club at Carlton Woods.

Defending champion Nelly Korda is aiming to become just the second player since Annika Sorenstam in 2002 to successfully retain this title, but the American is yet to win this season and there are others who make greater appeal.

James Mason's top tip

Yealimi Noh 40-1

American Yealimi Noh showcased her talent at last year's Chevron Championship when finishing in a share for ninth, a huge improvement from her missed cut at the same course in 2023, and she returns as an LPGA Tour winner.

The 23-year-old recorded a four-shot victory at the Founders Cup in February and she has kept the momentum going since that breakthrough win, registering two further top-tens, a top-15 and a top-20 finish.

Noh ranks first for strokes gained approach and tee-to-green and is second in SG total, and that solid ball-striking should be hugely beneficial given how difficult conditions are expected to be.

Also sitting fourth in greens in regulation, the one weakness of Noh's game was her putting, but she has made huge gains on the greens with the broomstick putter and looks to be the complete package now.

Next best bet

Akie Iwai 33-1

Japan is developing top women golfers at a rate of knots and Akie Iwai has been catching the eye in her rookie LPGA season, with runner-up finishes at the Honda LPGA Thailand and JM Eagle LA Championship.

The 22-year-old is another solid ball-striker, ranking fifth in SG approach, ninth in tee-to-green and 11th in greens in regulation, while her standing of tenth in putts per GIR is evidence of her deft touch on the dancefloor.

Other selection

Ina Yoon 40-1

Another LPGA rookie to watch out for is Ina Yoon, who has been building steadily in the early part of the season and recorded her best finish of the year when tied-16th at the JM Eagle LA Championship last time out.

The 21-year-old South Korean sits third in strokes gained approach and fifth in tee-to-green, and she could be a real danger if the putter warms up this week.
