Steve Palmer's LIV Mexico City preview

Bryson DeChambeau was humbled in the final round of the Masters last time out, while Joaquin Niemann failed to improve his miserable Majors record and Tyrrell Hatton will be fuming with the way he meekly squandered a promising position at Augusta with a sorry Saturday 75.

Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka missed the cut at the Masters, so some moody and downbeat players feature prominently in the LIV Mexico City market.

Jon Rahm 6-1

Former world number one Jon Rahm has never finished a LIV event outside the top ten, winning two titles, and the Spaniard can complete an overdue LIV hat-trick in Mexico City on Sunday.

Rahm loves his trips to Mexico, where he made his PGA Tour debut in 2014. He was a crowd favourite at Chapultepec in the four WGCs there, finishing third in 2017 and third again in 2020, enjoying an ace on his way to a course-record 61.

The Spanish-speaking galleries adore Rahm, who won the 2022 Mexico Open on the PGA Tour, then finished runner-up in his title defence, carding a 61. Rahm finished third last year in LIV Mayakoba, his only previous LIV outing in Mexico, building on his special relationship with the Mexican fans.

Rahm improved every day of the Masters, closing with a 69 for 14th place, then he teed up in a practice match with David Puig at Whisper Rock the following Tuesday and carded a 59 on his way to a 6&5 success. Returning to a happy hunting ground with his A-game, the two-time Major champion looks the golf bet of the week.

Patrick Reed 14-1

The short-game class of Patrick Reed serves him well at Chapultepec and he improved in each year of the WGC there, winning the title in 2020. Expect this feisty competitor to go close to a maiden LIV victory on Sunday.

Reed's greens-in-regulation numbers on his way to second place in the Macau Open on the Asian Tour a month ago were stunning, then he finished seventh in LIV Miami and third in the Masters. He seems a surefire Mexico City contender.

Carlos Ortiz 25-1

Complete a three-pronged attack with Carlos Ortiz, who beat Reed in that Macau Open. Ortiz also won an Asian Tour event last year. This year, he was second in LIV Adelaide then closed with a 66 for fourth spot in LIV Miami.

Ortiz opened with a 75 on his Chapultepec debut in the 2020 WGC, but rounds of 68, 66, 68 meant 16th place, which was a great effort as a PGA Tour maiden. He won a Korn Ferry Tour event in Mexico in 2014, was runner-up in the Mayakoba event on the PGA Tour in both 2019 and 2021, and has got a fantastic record generally in his homeland. He can go close to a second LIV title on Sunday.

• Course overview Chapultepec hosted the WGC-Mexico Championship from 2017 through 2020, with players who have since become LIV golfers winning every event. The average winning score from those events (over 72 holes) was 17.25 under par. The tree-lined layout has tight, undulating fairways, but the venue is more than 7,800 yards above sea level, so balls fly further at the altitude. The par-threes are difficult, but the rest of the course serves up plenty of birdies. The fairways are kikuyu grass, but the greens are a mix of Poa and bentgrass
