Steve Palmer's LIV Golf Riyadh preview
The LIV Golf season starts in Saudi Arabia on Thursday and punters are wondering how Jon Rahm will perform. The Spaniard has played just one tournament in the last 15 weeks – a missed cut in the Dubai Desert Classic – so is probably loaded with rust.
Rahm is making his course debut this week and is the least appealing of the market principals. Joaquin Niemann, who won the Saudi International at this week's venue on the Asian Tour in December, is much more tempting. He also won LIV Jeddah last year. Niemann finished third in India on the Asian Tour last week in his first start of 2025.
This week's event will be played in the evenings, under floodlights. Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka got some experience of floodlit golf in The Showdown in December, but both played poorly. DeChambeau and Koepka are debutants at Riyadh GC this week.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Tyrrell Hatton 7-1
The accuracy and control of Tyrrell Hatton means floodlit golf holds no fears for him. The Englishman is one of the straightest hitters in the game and this increasingly consistent operator seems the most likely LIV Riyadh champion.
Hatton went top of the European Ryder Cup Rankings after his Dubai Desert Classic triumph and he is eighth in the world rankings. He will almost certainly be playing in the Majors and the Ryder Cup this year, so starts his LIV campaign in high spirits.
Victory in the Dunhill Links in October was followed by second place in Abu Dhabi, sixth in the DPWT Championship, then fifth in the Saudi International, in which he fired a second-round 63 at this week's venue.
Tip-top Tyrrell started 2025 with three and a half points from four matches for GB&I in the Team Cup in Abu Dhabi, then won in Dubai, before taking a fortnight off to recharge batteries. He won the Abu Dhabi Championship in 2021 and can complete a hat-trick of Middle East triumphs on Saturday.
Next best bet
David Puig 25-1
Spanish youngster David Puig started this year with third place in the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, outscoring everybody in the field with a closing 65. He finished fourth in Bahrain last week, signing off with a 64 which again was the best Sunday score on the DPWT.
Nicely grooved for Saudi Arabia, expect the two-time Asian Tour champion to threaten a maiden LIV title this week. He gained course experience of Riyadh in December, has had two ideal prep spins on similar layouts in Ras and Bahrain, and looks a rising star of the sport.

- Course overview LIV Jeddah at Royal Greens has been the traditional home of the Saudi Arabia leg of LIV Golf, but this year the stop has become LIV Riyadh at Riyadh Golf Club for the first time, with floodlit evening golf introduced. The action starts at 6.15pm local time – half-an-hour after sunset. Riyadh hosted the Saudi International on the Asian Tour for the first time in December, with Joaquin Niemann defeating Cameron Smith and Caleb Surratt in a three-man playoff. The Duncan Thompson-designed track has wide, undulating fairways. Much of the yardage is made up from two giant par-fives – the 627-yard third and the 681-yard tenth. The longest par four is the 454-yard 12th hole
- Weather forecast Pleasant and calm, with warm, dry evenings
- Type of player suited to the challenge Generous fairways and a series of short par-fours make this a 'second-shot course', where accurate irons and wedges should be the key to success
- Key attribute Accuracy
