Steve Palmer's LIV Dallas preview

Dallas-based duo Bryson DeChambeau and Carlos Ortiz will probably be popular with punters this week as they tee up close to home.

Two-time US Open champion DeChambeau should arguably be favourite, while Ortiz, who won the Houston Open on the PGA Tour in 2020 and finished fourth in the US Open earlier this month, also deserves plenty of respect.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Patrick Reed 20-1

Better value than DeChambeau and Ortiz this week may be Patrick Reed, a Texan who will be relishing the chance to claim a maiden LIV title in his home state.

The 2018 Masters champion still has the ability to challenge for the sport's highest honours. He was third in the Masters in April and 23rd in the US Open this month, having won on the Asian Tour in November.

This relentless competitor, who turns 35 in August, doubtless harbours Ryder Cup aspirations. He will be looking to catch the eye of American Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

Reed's short-game class counts for plenty around the run-off areas of Maridoe and the firm, fast conditions help. He had a 100 percent record in the matchplay element of the LIV Team Championship at Maridoe in September, then carded three under par in the strokeplay on the Sunday, helping his Four Aces side to second place.

Next best bet

Sergio Garcia 33-1

Another Ryder Cup legend hoping to convince he is worthy of a wild-card pick is Sergio Garcia, who is teeing up on the DP World Tour in Germany next week in a bid to further his cause. This week may be even more important to those aspirations.

The leading player in the LIV standings after LIV Dallas who is not already exempt for the Open will get a place at Royal Portrush next month. With Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm already qualified, Garcia is in pole position for an Open spot.

Garcia is highly motivated to perform this week and a closing 64 in LIV Virginia last time out showed his A-game is not far from the surface. Garcia lives in Texas, is married to a Texan, his maiden PGA Tour title came in Texas, and he has won three PGA Tour events in the Lone Star State.

Like Reed, Garcia had a 100 percent record in the matchplay element of the LIV Team Championship at Maridoe in September, but his team failed to qualify for the Sunday strokeplay. The Spaniard will relish the firm, fast conditions this week and looks well capable of giving Luke Donald a selection headache over the coming weeks.
