Inspired Rory McIlroy charges to FedEx Cup glory at East Lake for a third time

Rory McIlroy completed a FedEx Cup hat-trick at East Lake on Sunday, overcoming a six-shot final-round deficit to topple Scottie Scheffler in an epic Tour Championship.

McIlroy, a 12-1 chance ante-post, started the final day at East Lake, Georgia, at 11-1 for victory, but he closed round three of the weather-interrupted event with back-to-back birdies, then conjured a final-round 66 to pip Scheffler and Sungjae Im by a shot.

Scheffler signed off with a three-over-par 73 to squander the advantage he had gained in round three. Xander Schauffele finished alone in fourth place, with Max Homa and Justin Thomas tied for fifth.

McIlroy was the lowest 72-hole scorer (without the starting handicaps), going 17 under par, a shot better than Im. Homa, Thomas and Tom Hoge completed the top five scorers without handicaps.

The PGA Tour takes a fortnight break - the new season starting with the Fortinet Championship on September 15, followed by the Presidents Cup. Punters still have two tournaments to consider this week, though, with the LIV Golf series resuming.

LIV Golf Boston starts on Friday and finishes on Sunday. Cameron Smith is widely expected to be starting his LIV Golf career on Friday, with Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Young and Marc Leishman also reportedly potential new LIV signings.

The DP World Tour moves from Switzerland to Denmark for the Made In Himmerland event. Thriston Lawrence was the 33-1 winner of the European Masters on Sunday. The South African is set to tee up in Denmark, along with the Hojgaard brothers and Thorbjorn Olesen.
