Injury may still cause problems for troubled Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler skipped the opening two FedEx Cup playoff events with a muscle problem and the colourful Californian looks unlikely to make much of an impact when he returns to action at the BMW Championship.

Fowler tees it up at Aronimink Golf Club in 26th place in the Fed Ex standings and, with only 30 players progressing to the Tour Championship at East Lake in two weeks' time, will want to consolidate his position.

But that won't be easy as the popular 29-year-old has been in moderate form all season compared to his own high standards, recording just one top-ten finish in nine PGA Tour events since finishing second at the Masters in April.

Take him on at Aronimink in a match bet with Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama.

The metronomic 26-year-old struggled with wrist problems earlier in the year but is threaten­ing to make up for lost time since returning to fitness.

Matsuyama, who finished in a tie for fourth at last week's Dell Technologies Championship, looks ready to win again and should enjoy himself at a course where his magnificent ball-striking will come to the fore.

Muscular injuries such as Fowler's are often hard to shake off and he could be set for a low-key return in Pennsylvania.

Another man worth siding with at the BMW is Webb Simpson.
The 33-year-old has been in great touch this season, storming to victory at the Players Champion­ship and recording top-20 finishes in all four Major championships.

He came close to winning again at the Wyndham Championship last month on a track which, like Aronimink, was designed by renowned course architect Donald Ross.

Simpson boasts five-year Wyndham form of 5-6-72-3-2 and should enjoy himself around this typical parkland layout where the fairways have been widened to encourage players to look for angles into the pin.

Louis Oosthuizen snuck into the third FedEx Cup event by a whisker, finishing in 69th place in the standings, and it's been a while since the South African contended. It will come as a surprise were he to better Simpson's score around a track that the American should enjoy.
