Harris English was the 30-1 winner of the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course, Kapalua, Hawaii - the Georgian giant ending a seven-year PGA Tour victory drought.

English, who won twice in 2013 before his long barren spell, birdied the first extra hole of a Kapalua playoff against Joaquin Niemann. English missed a short eagle putt at the 72nd hole which would have guaranteed success, but held his nerve in overtime to see off the Chilean youngster.

Justin Thomas threatened to retain his title, but a bogey at the 17th was costly, the world number three ending up alone in third place. Dustin Johnson, ante-post 6-1 favourite, could manage only a share of 11th spot, seven shots behind, while Jon Rahm tied for seventh, two shots superior.

Xander Schauffele and Webb Simpson both returned from Christmas bouts of Covid-19, but played well in the circumstances, finishing tied fifth and 17th respectively.

The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii this week for the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, where Australian ace Cameron Smith, second in the Masters in November, will be defending his title. There are 32 players from the 42-man Sentry field who are making the short trip to Waialae for the Sony, including Sentry champion English and runner-up Niemann.

The European Tour resumes next week with the Abu Dhabi Championship. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Tyrrell Hatton, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are on a high-class entry list.
