Story so far

Anyone who thought the first FedEx Cup playoff would be a tame affair that just concentrated on who would make the final 50 places for next week's BMW Championship will have been surprised at what has happened at this week's FedEx St Jude Championship.

Rather than the absence of shot starts for the Tour Championship meaning that the big names went through the motions - Rory McIlroy even elected to sit this one out - an intriguing battle has ensued and we should be in for a cracking Sunday night of golf.

Plenty of ingredients are there with the main storyline being whether Tommy Fleetwood can finally get over the line and win a PGA Tour tournament, six weeks after he was cruelly denied at the Travelers Championship by US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

Fleetwood looked set to take a three-shot lead into today's final round but a bogey on the last allowed his playing partner and friend Justin Rose to narrow the gap to one when he carded a birdie in a solid 67.

Added to the mix is that world number one Scottie Scheffler sits just a further shot behind.

The recently crowned Open champion showed unusual frustrations at times as he struggled to find fairways, but his putting was excellent and his 65 leaves him breathing down the English pair's necks.

Add US Open winner JJ Spaun quietly going about his business three off the pace and we could witness a great finish at TPC Southwind.

FedEx St Jude Championship final-round predictions

It promises to be a great day of golf and all eyes will be on Fleetwood to see if he has the mental strength to finally get over the line.

The need to find fairways and greens in regulation at TPC Southwind means it is a suitable track for him, but it seems too simple to just suggest that he needs to just continue doing what he has been doing and he will finally get to celebrate that PGA Tour triumph.

It could be that playing alongside Rose for the second consecutive day will help - the pair are great friends and spent last week on holiday together in Portugal - but there always has to be that nag of curiosity that will surround what Scheffler is up to.

The world number one scratched his way round yesterday and for someone who has been criticised for his perceived indifference towards golf over the last few weeks, he did let out a few frustrations when things did not go his way.

It is perfectly possible that Fleetwood will not do much wrong and Scheffler could still turn up and fire a 62 to take the crown, which means for many it will be a contest to savour rather than one to get too heavily involved in financially.

Rose was delighted with the way he played the first nine holes yesterday and will have his backers at 9-2 as he could just grind it out, but it looks worth having a small each-way investment on US Open champion JJ Spaun.

The unassuming Californian fired a 65 yesterday that included a double bogey on the sixth and will not receive much attention as the crowd focuses on what is going on with the top three.

Spaun gained almost four shots on approach during the third round and if he can get his putter going in the final round, then there looks a good chance he can creep up and gain a place return with a third of the odds being offered for a top-two finish.
