Steve Palmer's Singapore Classic preview
Robert MacIntyre has trekked from the Players Championship in Florida to the Singapore Classic, so the Scot is entitled to make a lethargic start at Laguna National. He missed the cut by five shots in his only previous course start, so makes no appeal at short odds.
Paul Casey, who competed in LIV Singapore last week, is more attractive at double the odds of MacIntyre, but the Englishman turns 48 in July and his best days are probably behind him.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Tom McKibbin 16-1
With four LIV Golf tournaments under his belt, Tom McKibbin has quickly banked a fortune, and he can approach this week's DP World Tour assignment with confidence. The Northern Irishman can boast LIV form figures of 15-7-6-25 and has also been picking up healthy cheques in the team events as a member of Legion XIII, with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton as his colleagues.
LIV Singapore seems ideal preparation for the Singapore Classic. McKibbin was five under par over the weekend in that event, which was staged a 25-minute drive away from the Singapore Classic venue. Nicely acclimatised in the country, McKibbin can hit the ground running at a course he knows well from playing in the previous two Singapore Classics.
McKibbin had DPWT form figures of MC-MC-36 going into the 2023 Singapore Classic as a rookie ranked 308th in the world, yet he opened with a 64 and finished 12th. Last year, he went down with tonsillitis soon after arriving at Laguna National, felt terrible and missed the cut, but the long, soft layout is ideal terrain for this fantastic driver to make merry.
Next best bet
Alejandro Del Rey 35-1
The Ras al Khaimah Championship at the end of January provided a maiden DPWT title for Alejandro Del Rey, who romped to a four-shot victory. His missed cut the following week in Bahrain is easy to forgive, while further missed cuts in Qatar and the Joburg Open were by just one shot. The Spaniard tied for 25th in the SA Open at the start of this month and remains full of confidence.
Del Rey won on the Alps Tour in 2020, on the Challenge Tour in 2022, and is an improving 27-year-old teeing up this week at one of his favourite courses. He was world number 343 going into the 2023 Singapore Classic, but finished third, then he was 274th in the rankings before finishing seventh last year. Only champion Jesper Svensson outscored him over the weekend of last year's event.
Other selections
Wenyi Ding 33-1
Ugo Coussaud 55-1
David Ravetto 70-1
Former world number three amateur, Wenyi Ding, has been banking some decent cheques since becoming a DPWT member. He turned professional after topping the Global Amateur Pathway Rankings, then finished fifth in the Australian Open in December.
Ding's progressive form figures of 55-35-20-14 can get better this week. All his events this year have been course debuts, but he knows Laguna National having teed up there as a teenage amateur in the 2023 Singapore Classic. He opened with a pair of 66s to lead that event before finishing 23rd.
Complete your staking plan with a pair of Frenchmen. Ugo Coussaud played well in the Joburg Open last time out, coming unstuck with a triple-bogey seven at the 15th hole of round three. His Challenge Tour victory came in Asia and he finished 37th on his Laguna debut last year. A long, soft Laguna seems ideal for this powerful driver to go close to a DPWT breakthrough.
David Ravetto is also a magnificent driver. He was 586th in the world rankings going into the 2023 Singapore Classic, but finished 23rd. At the start of last year he won his first Challenge Tour title, then he was 21st in the Singapore Classic, before making his DPWT breakthrough with a four-shot romp in the Czech Masters last August.
Ravetto's Czech success came on a driver-heavy track and he faces a similar assignment this week. Only the winner, Svensson, outscored Ravetto in the final round of last year's Singapore Classic.
