Course overview
Yokohama Country Club is a 36-hole complex consisting of a West and East course. The West course hosted the 2018 Japan Open, won by Yuki Inamori, and two Yokohama Minato Championships in 2023 and 2024 – won by Keita Nakajima and Ren Yonezawa – but a composite course will be played this week that will include two holes from the East.
The layout consists of tree-lined fairways with few bunkers and the greens are bentgrass.
Both par-fives on the front nine, the 536-yard fourth and the 529-yard six, can be reached in two and they should be attacked by players of this calibre. There are two par-fours on in the inward nine – the 11th and 14th – measuring in excess of 500 yards.
This is the first time the course has been used for this tournament, formerly known as the Zozo Championship, which was played five times at Narashino Country Club and once, during the Covid-19 pandemic, at Sherwood Country Club in California. It has moved forward three weeks in the schedule from last year.
What will it take to win the Baycurrent Classic?
With few statistics available for the new course, it is difficult to summarise what qualities will be needed, particularly as it is not exactly the same layout as that used for the three previous Japanese Tour tournaments.
Some of the tee shots look to be pretty tight, so finding the fairways and avoiding the trees could be a passport to success and strong course management will also be an asset.
