America short odds for next Ryder Cup after whipping Europe at Whistling Straits

The United States are 8-15 favourites for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy after their record-breaking Whistling Straits demolition job of Europe.

Steve Stricker's American side avenged the heavy 2018 Ryder Cup defeat by dominating along the shores of Lake Michigan. The Slaughter by the Water started with a 6-2 opening-day lead, extended to 11-5 on day two, then was completed by an 8-4 singles success for a 19-9 victory - the largest margin since the European side was formed in 1979.

USA to win 19-9 was a pre-tournament 33-1 chance and the home side could be backed at 15-8 to lead after every day and triumph. Stricker's team were 4-7 for the Cup in places on Tuesday morning, before going off a general 8-15.

Dustin Johnson, the highest-ranked player in the American line-up, became only the third player in history to score five points in a USA versus Europe match. Johnson, the oldest man in the Yank squad, was the only American to play in five matches. He was the 12-1 winner of the top overall scorer market and 15-2 for top American.

Jon Rahm took top European honours at 7-2 after claiming three-and-a-half points from five matches. Viktor Hovland was the only other European to get five matches, but the Norwegian could manage only one point.

Patrick Cantlay (9-2) and Collin Morikawa (13-2) tied for top rookie and top American rookie (3-1 and 4-1), while Hovland (10-11) and Shane Lowry (13-8) tied for top European rookie.

Xander Schauffele (9-2) and Sergio Garcia (8-1) tied for top wildcard. Schauffele (3-1) was top Yank wildcard and Garcia (7-4) was top European wildcard.

Europe can be backed at 15-8 for victory at the Marco Simone Club in Rome in two years' time, with the draw at 12-1. The 2025 match will be at Bethpage Black, New York.

European Tour action resumes this week with the Dunhill Links Championship. The PGA Tour is in Jackson for the Sanderson Farms Championship.
