Weekend Gaelic Football predictions
Westmeath vs Laois
GAA+, 5pm Saturday
Westmeath were dumped out of the Leinster championship by Kildare, but for about an hour of that outing they looked every bit as good as the Lilywhites, if not better, and just lacked a bit of composure in front of goal. They paid the price in the closing stages.
They have dusted themselves down and dished out a huge hammering to Antrim in the opening round of the Tailteann Cup - scoring 4-24 in the process - and then downed London in round two with 13 points to spare.
They were caught on the hop last time by Limerick but they have had their big scare now and still look to have every chance of going all the way in the competition.
Laois staged a smash-and-grab raid over neighbours Offaly to book their spot in the knockout stages but the handicap of three points looks low.
Westmeath are a few stages ahead of Laois in their progress and they should cover that line.
Wesmeath have failed to find the net in their last two outings, but they were devastating against Antrim and scored four goals. Laois have been leaky at the back - conceding three goals to Offaly - so the favourites could hit the net on at least two occasions. This could be a very open game of attacking football.
Sligo vs Carlow
2pm Sunday
Carlow have performed above expectations on a couple of occasions this year, especially given the turmoil in the camp earlier on in the campaign, but they could be in for a rude awakening when the visit Tubbercurry to fancy Sligo.
The Yeats County gave it a right old rattle against Kildare, scoring a tasty 1-24, but conceding four goals proved their undoing. This represents a drop in class and they can take care of Carlow with ease. The best bet on the coupon is for the hosts to defy a six-point handicap at a shade of odds-against.
