Weekend Gaelic Football predictions

London vs Roscommon

2.30pm Saturday

There are always big handicaps for various provincial openers due to the huge gaps in quality between various sides and that is the case for Roscommon's trip to Ruislip to face London where the spread is 16 points.

That might sound like an awful lot, but with the new rules including two points for scoring outside the arc, we could have some huge scoring tallies put up over the next few weeks and Roscommon could be the first side to do just that.

If Ciaran and Diarmuid Murtagh are on song, Roscommon could rack up a big score. To add to their appeal, they will also be hurting from last weekend's Division 2 final loss to Monaghan when they played deplorably in the second half. Davy Burke will want a reaction and he should get one.

Donegal vs Derry predictions

RTE & BBC, 2pm Sunday

Donegal are generally 1-7 to get their Ulster championship campaign off to a winning start in their beloved Ballybofey, but it could be closer than the market suggests.

Derry have a whole host of injuries with defenders Conor McCluskey and Gareth McKinless out long-term, midfielder Anton Tohill sidelined with a broken hand and Brendan Rogers a doubtful starter. Add to that injury list Donncha Gilmore and Cormac Murphy who are also out, while Padraig McGrogan, Ciaran McFaul and Lachlan Murray have only recently returned from injury, so new Derry boss Paddy Tally has been dealt a horrible hand.

That said, they still have quality in their side and Conor Glass will ensure Donegal don't lord the midfield exchanges. The six-point handicap is one the visitors should be able to stick within.

Meath vs Carlow predictions

3pm Sunday

Seldom have two teams entered a championship encounter in such turmoil as Meath and Carlow.

Carlow's manager Shane Curran walked away after the league, while Meath coaches Martin Corey and Joe McMahon, who had dug the foundations for a decent year in the league, have sensationally stepped down from Robbie Brennan's setback.

Who knows what effect those changes will have on the two sides, but surely Meath should be able to rack up a huge score at home to Carlow and Matthew Costello is back in the starting side to help that cause. The pace and energy of Ruari Kinsella and Cathal Hickey will spice up the side, too and the hosts can take care of a 13-point handicap with the minimum of fuss.
