Kerry v Mayo
Killarney
RTE 1/Premier Sports 2, 4pm Sunday

Kerry have not lost a championship match at Fitzgerald Stadium since their Munster final defeat to Cork in 1995 and that remarkable record is unlikely to be ended by Mayo.

The Kingdom have too much firepower up front for a Mayo side who have done well to get to this stage of the competition given their tricky path and long list of injuries.

Their two-man full-forward line of Paul Geaney and David Clifford, with Stephen O’Brien and Sean O’Shea running from deeper, have the potential to unlock this Mayo defence and the two-point handicap should be safely passed by the hosts.

Kerry’s Munster final win over Cork, albeit more workmanlike than wonderful, does not look bad form given the thrashing the Rebels gave to Laois last Saturday. They are still All-Ireland contenders and have more to offer than Mayo.

Had this game been in the third round of Super 8 fixtures and played at Croke Park, Mayo would have merited serious consideration. The further they get, the better they will be, but asking them to beat a fresh Kerry team dripping in dazzling attackers is a bit too much at this stage of the summer.

Diarmuid O’Connor’s absence should be not underestimated and whether Stephen Coen will get the same space to do damage as he did against Galway is questionable with Jack Sherwood likely to sit in front of him and Cillian O’Connor.

Kerry’s style of play is quite similar to Armagh’s. They like to kick the ball into their full-forward line as quickly as possible and they are even better at it than the Orchard County. They have spent decades doing it.

We all saw the carnage Jamie Clarke, Rian O’Neill and Stefan Campbell caused Mayo and this time you are replacing that trio with Geaney, Clifford and O’Brien.

If Paddy Duncan is out for Mayo, his tenacious no-nonsense defending will be sorely missed. It could open the floodgates for the Kingdom.

Given the pace and guile in this Kerry attack, it is not hard to envisage them creating at least four genuine goalscoring opportunities and they have clinical finishers too so back over 1.5 Kerry goals. It might pay to also take the 5-1 about them getting three.
