Hurling Championship predictions

Galway vs Wexford predictions

RTE, 3.15pm Saturday

This is a game of huge significance in Leinster as whoever loses will see their chances of making a provincial final go up in smoke.

Galway put in a wretched display against Kilkenny in the opening round but bounced back to some extent when hammering Offaly a fortnight ago. It's hard to draw many conclusions from that given their opponents put up little resistance.

Daithi Burke's sending-off means he's suspended, which is a blow and they just haven't shown anything this year to justify them being such a short price against Wexford.

Keith Rossiter's men finished off the league campaign very encouragingly and eased past Antrim in the opening round. They would have been bitterly disappointed to lose to Dublin in round two, when their opponents rattled in three quickfire goals in seven minutes approaching the last quarter.

That swung momentum considerably given Wexford were enjoying a three-point lead at the time and the fact the first goal never crossed the line was a source of great frustration for the losers.

It won't be easy going to Pearse Stadium but Wexford have the firepower to put it up to a Galway side who have been far from convincing and they are grossly overpriced to turn them over.

Clare vs Tipperary predictions

GAA+, 6pm Saturday

Another pivotal game in the provincial series, this is essentially knockout as both sides are on one point from two games after suffering sobering losses in the last round.

Waterford put Clare to the sword in the last round but Brian Lohan's side were suffering badly with absentees. Tony Kelly returns to the starting lineup and Shane O'Donnell is named on the bench, which is a huge boost, but Conor Cleary and Aidan McCarthy aren't named on the matchday squad, while David Fitzgerald has curiously been relegated to the bench.

Darragh McCarthy's early red card scuppered any hope of Tipperary turning Cork over last week but they did put up a spirited display for much of the contest, albeit Cork definitely took their foot off the gas when the game was beyond recall.

McCarthy's absence is a blow for Liam Cahill's men and trying to beat the All-Ireland champions away - albeit they have been off-colour this year - in order to survive is a big ask. Kelly's return and the fact their championship survival is on the line should see Clare get their act together but it's far from a confident selection given how ropey their form has been.

The forecast balmy weather with no gusty conditions, unlike Clare's last outing when they had to battle a strong wind in the first half, should result in a free-scoring game with plenty of attacking talent on display, while David Reidy is worth a look to hit the net given he has been lethal in front of goal recently.
