Waterford's sole success over Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Championship arrived in a replay in 1959 when they tamed the Cats by 3-12 to 1-10, and the chances of a repeat at Semple Stadium this evening in their semi-final replay look slim.

Waterford should not have needed a second bite of the cherry. They should have beaten Kilkenny last Sunday at Croke Park when Brian Cody’s charges were a pale shadow of the side who were crowned All-Ireland champions in 2015. They were lethargic, lacked ideas and did not play with their usual drive and intent.

They somehow managed to escape unscathed thanks to a last-gasp Conor Fogarty point and they look set to seize their chance to book yet another All-Ireland final in style.
