Match previews

Laois v Dublin

GAAGo (streaming), 5pm Saturday

Laois appeared quite disjointed when shooting 20 wides in their 19-point defeat to Wexford last week and matters don't look set to get much better when Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett's men welcome Dublin to O'Moore Park in round two.

Saturday's hosts caused a memorable upset when defeating the Dubs in the 2019 championship preliminary quarter-final, but the visitors simply look to have too much quality and face a significantly lesser task than last week when not disgraced in defeat against Kilkenny.

Mattie Kenny's side came up five points short but it's worth remembering that they finished the game with 14 men and were level after the second water break, unable to match the Leinster champions' 1-4 without reply in the closing stages.

Expect Dublin to run out comfortable winners, and there is some juice in the -10 handicap price.

Tipperary v Cork

Eir Sport, 7.30pm Saturday

For all that Cork finished impressively in putting up 5-22 against Waterford last week, there seems to have been an overreaction in some quarters to that seven-point victory over a side missing some key figures.

There was certainly encouragement to be taken from how the Rebels' forwards worked to put pressure on the Waterford backs, but they still let an 11-point lead slip to just four in the closing stages before a flurry of late goals put some gloss on the scoreline - the Deise looked very rusty.

There's every chance Cork will fall short against a Tipperary side who nearly inflicted a rare defeat on Limerick last week.

The Premier were five points clear just after the second water break but their lack of recent game time caught them out down the stretch, only adding a single point thereafter.

They should be sharper now and are a confident vote to cause Cork serious problems.

Clare v Wexford

GAAGo (streaming), 12.30pm Sunday

Strap yourself in for another gripping encounter between two sides - and two managers - with no shortage of history between them.

Clare's shock defeat last weekend at odds of 1-20 to Antrim did nothing to help off-field rumblings around the inner-workings of the county's operations, while Wexford made a satisfactory start against a below-par Laois side.

The Banner's woes could give Davy Fitzgerald's men the sniff of a chance to inflict damage on the Munster side, albeit the visitors are still likely to be quite undercooked at this stage of the year.

There were seven points between the teams when Clare eliminated Wexford from last year's championship, but the Model County were in disarray last term.

A more accurate reflection of the gap between the sides could be gleaned from when Clare won by three points in their league encounter and given the relative uncertainty over what to expect from Brian Lohan's team, this looks a perfect chance to utilise the market offering 4-5 about a draw or either team to win by less than four points.

Galway v Limerick

TG4, 3.45pm Sunday

Arguably the game of the weekend, this should give us an idea of how far forward both sides are at this early stage of the season.

Galway were impressive in beating Westmeath by 30 points in round one, raising five green flags in the process, but meet an entirely different animal here who will not allow them to score goals with anywhere near the same ease.

The Treaty have not conceded more than two goals in any league or championship game since John Kiely's first season in charge back in 2017 and, at the other end of the pitch, they only hit the net in one of their five championship outings last year.

That makes markets involving a low number of goals particularly appealing.
