Australian league football returns this weekend and reigning champions Sydney FC look likely to pick up where they left off last season when they travel to Adelaide United.

With just three defeats all season, Sydney finished 14 points clear at the top and are 4-1 favourites to claim a third consecutive league trophy.

The Sky Blues are without last season’s top scorer Bobo following his move to Alanyaspor, but have brought in new recruits to fill the void.

Adam Le Fondre adds to the high-calibre attacking options for Steve Corica’s side after his move from Bolton and will be out to make an impact on his debut.

Adelaide finished fifth last season and face Sydney in the FFC final at the end of this month but they haven’t been able to find any winning form against the title-holders.

They have gone eight games without a victory against the champions and managed only one point from a possible nine last season.

A busy period of transfer activity should raise hopes - Denmark youth international Ken Ilso caught the eye in pre-season - but they struggled on home soil last campaign with just four wins and ending their poor run against Sydney could prove beyond them.
