Notts County chief Chettle concentrating on Cheltenham

First round, 7.45pm Wednesday

Harry Kewell’s 74-day reign in charge of Notts County is over, leaving caretaker Steve Chettle with the job of preparing the Magpies for Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two crunch against Cheltenham, one of only two teams below them in the basement.

Chettle also has an EFL Trophy dust-up with Doncaster to think about but it’s clear from statements made by the board that the only game that matters this week is the one against Cheltenham.

County have played two and lost two in the competition and Donny should oblige at a shade of odds-on.

The other game pits Southend against Southampton’s development squad. The Shrimpers have injuries so will make as many changes as Chris Powell can get away with, although he won’t take the Saints’ kids lightly as they have already won at Colchester in the group stage.

Qatar’s build-up to next year’s Asian Cup sees them take on Switzerland in Lugano. The Qataris are no mugs and they beat Ecuador 4-3 last month but it’s hard to see them landing many blows against the eighth-ranked Swiss.
