Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds may press Derby into submission

Rams a work in progress under Frank Lampard

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa

Sky Sports Football, 5.30pm Saturday

Frank Lampard and Marcelo Bielsa are two managers at very different stages of their careers but they share a common goal - earning promotion from the Sky Bet Championship.

Both men began life in the second tier in the best possible fashion on the opening weekend. Lampard watched his Derby side come from behind to grab a last-minute winner at Reading, while the Bielsa effect was there for all to see at Elland Road as promotion favourites Stoke were pressed into submission by a hugely impressive Leeds performance.

That was the first match of a tough opening set of fixtures for the Yorkshire club with the Rams, Swansea, Norwich and Middlesbrough to come before the month is out.

It remains to be seen whether, as his been the case with other sides Bielsa has managed, Leeds can maintain the high-tempo style of play their manager demands over the course of an entire Championship season, but for the early exchanges at least, their legs should be fresh enough to execute the revered Argentinian’s gameplan.

Stoke’s midfield could not live with the pressure exerted upon them and it should be an area Leeds can exploit again.

Lampard described making a winning start to his management as an “incredible feeling” but he will know his Derby side need to play much better if they are to be genuine contenders.

Reading, who only narrowly avoided relegation last term, matched the Rams for large parts of their opener, creating as many shots as the Midlands outfit despite having only a third of the possession.

It’s unlikely Derby will be able to dictate as much as they did at the Madejski with Leeds pressing them at every opportunity and it could force them into mistakes.

The Whites were clinical against Stoke and judged on what we saw on the opening weekend they look a more complete side than the Rams at this stage.
