Match preview

Qatar are on a mission to accumulate as much tournament experience as possible before hosting the World Cup in November 2022 and they can advance to the Concacaf Gold Cup semi-finals with a victory over El Salvador at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

The Qataris were far from disgraced at the 2019 Copa America, where they drew 2-2 with Paraguay before losses to Colombia (0-1) and Argentina (0-2), and are flourishing at the Gold Cup where the standard of opponent is much lower.

They topped Group D by following up a 3-3 draw against Panama with routine victories over Grenada (4-0) and Honduras (2-0), and there is no need for them to fear El Salvador, who have lost five successive Gold Cup quarter-finals.

El Salvador finished second to Mexico in Group A thanks to a pair of 2-0 successes over Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago. However, they were defeated 1-0 by Qatar in a pre-tournament friendly in Croatia and are unlikely to reverse that result.

Mexico v Honduras

Match preview

Mexico have been serial winners at the Gold Cup, lifting the trophy four times in the last 12 years, and should brush aside quarter-final opponents Honduras at the State Farm Stadium.

Gerardo Martino's side breezed through the group stage, amassing seven points and three clean sheets, and should manage another shutout against the Hondurans, who finished second to Qatar in Group D.

Reaching this stage of the competition is a routine achievement for the Mexicans, who have advanced from their last nine Concacaf Gold Cup quarter-finals.

Martino has taken an experienced squad to the United States, with 13 of his 23 players capped at least 30 times, although he is looking for some improvement in attacking areas.

Mexico have lacked a top class centre-forward due to the absence of Raul Jimenez and are hoping for more goalscoring contributions from Monterrey centre-forward Rogelio Funes Mori, who bagged a double in the 3-0 group stage success over Guatemala.

A lack of offensive quality could be an issue against better opposition but Honduras look ill-equipped to capitalise.

The Hondurans were outshot 20 to four during a 2-0 loss to Qatar in their final group game and they may struggle to make any sort of impression against Mexico.
