Tuesday's World Cup qualifying predictions

The six automatic qualification spots for the 2026 World Cup have been sewn up in South America but seventh place in the table grants a spot in the intercontinental playoff and Bolivia know they must beat Brazil to have any chance of leapfrogging Venezuela.

Bolivia trail Venezuela by a point going into this closing qualifier so they must target maximum points as their rivals still face a tricky test of their own against Colombia.

At 4,150 metres above sea level, the new home of the Bolivian national team in El Alto is about as challenging as it gets when it comes to playing at altitude and Brazil, already qualified, may not relish the challenge.

Bolivia are unbeaten in six World Cup qualifiers at home, keeping five clean sheets which includes matches against Colombia and Uruguay, and Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has hinted at changes from Friday’s 3-0 win at home to Chile.

For all their quality, the Samba Stars have won only one of their last seven World Cup qualifiers on the road and Bolivia, in a must-win contest, may be able to conjure up the answers.

Portugal’s World Cup qualifying campaign started with a 5-0 rout of Armenia on Saturday and they can get among the goals again in their Group F trip to Hungary.

Portugal had 24 shots in that five-star display, legendary figure Cristiano Ronaldo was on target twice, and an expected-goals figure of 6.34 suggests it could have been plenty more.

Such is the wealth of talent at Roberto Martínez’s disposal, freshening things up with changes could be no bad thing and this looks the ideal time to be facing Hungary, who have won only three of their last 14 internationals.

The Magyars blew a 2-0 lead to draw with Ireland in their World Cup qualifying curtain-raiser and they will have bad memories of their most recent meeting with Portugal, who kickstarted their Euro 2021 campaign with a 3-0 victory against them.

Portugal’s Nations League triumph in June could rocket them to even greater heights and eight of their last 11 internationals have gone over 2.5 goals, so the shackles should be off.

Wales, currently third behind North Macedonia and Belgium in World Cup qualifying Group J, are set for a friendly showdown with Canada in Swansea and it should be a good test for Craig Bellamy’s men.

The Dragons faced a 7,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan on Thursday, grinding out a 1-0 victory to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive, but the Canucks may be better prepared for the challenge.

Canada were 3-0 winners in a friendly at Romania on Friday, which means they have lost only one of their last 15 internationals in 90 minutes, and star striker Jonathan David could have a starring role to play.

David opened the scoring against Romania after just 11 minutes, taking his tally to 37 goals in 68 appearances for Canada, and he is already off the mark for new club Juventus, grabbing the first goal in a 2-0 win over Parma.
