Kazakhstan vs Wales preview
Wales cannot afford any slip-ups on the road to the 2026 World Cup and they can sidestep a potential banana skin by beating Kazakhstan in Astana.
The Red Dragons have won admirers with their attacking brand of football and are reasonably well-placed despite a 4-3 loss away to Belgium last time out.
Wales showed fantastic spirit against the Belgians by coming from three goals down to level the game at 3-3, before their hopes were dashed by Kevin De Bruyne's 88th-minute winning goal.
Despite losing the game, Wales were rightly proud of their performance which showed how far they had come under their inexperienced but fearless manager.
Craig Bellamy has been in charge for just ten games but his team have a clear identity as a high-energy, possession-based side with an eagerness to attack at every opportunity.
Bellamy's tactics have brought about largely positive results and they were on an unbeaten run of nine-games before the setback in Brussels.
Losing to Belgium was a heavy blow, but there is plenty left to play for in a delicately balanced section.
Top seeds Belgium have started solidly by taking four points from two games while North Macedonia are top of the group on eight points, having achieved 1-1 draws at home to Belgium and Wales.
But Wales have every reason to look forward to the second half of the campaign which includes home fixtures against both of their principal qualification rivals.
Before looking too far ahead, Wales need to concentrate on Kazakhstan, who raised a few eyebrows during Euro 2024 qualifying by winning six of ten group-stage fixtures.
However, the Kazakhs went out in the playoff semi-finals – losing 5-0 away to Greece – and they have had a tough time over the last couple of years, suffering relegation to League C of the Nations League, and making a slow start to World Cup qualifying.
Kazakhstan have lost two of three World Cup qualifiers and their only points came from a 2-0 victory in Liechtenstein.
The Kazakhs lost 3-1 to Wales in Cardiff at the start of their campaign and they may not fare any better on home soil.
Rodon could be a set-piece threat
Leeds central defender Joe Rodon has scored just once for his country but he is strong in the air and will be a target from corners and wide free kicks. Rodon has registered four goal attempts in qualifying, including two efforts on target, and looks overpriced to force at least one save out of Kazakh goalkeeper Mukhammedzhan Seisen.
Welsh can maintain free-scoring ways
Wales were 3-1 winners against Kazakhstan at the start of qualifying and could succeed by the same scoreline in the return fixture. Craig Bellamy's side are scoring lots of goals but they sometimes leave gaps at the back and may offer up enough opportunities to allow their hosts to get on the scoresheet.
Kazakhstan vs Wales Bet Builder
Brennan Johnson to score at any time
Brennan Johnson has started the season strongly for Tottenham, scoring two goals, and can bring his positive club form to the international arena.
Over 2.5 goals
Wales are scoring and conceding plenty of goals and their attacking style of play should contribute to an entertaining game in Astana.
Ramazan Orazov to commit at least two fouls
Ramazan Orazov has been booked in each of his last two club appearances and he could soon find himself on the wrong side of referee Alejandro Hernandez.
