Everton have appointed Marco Silva as their new manager.

Silva, who was sacked by Watford last season after the Hornets accused Everton of 'tapping up' their manager, succeeds unpopular Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park and he will be joined by new director of football Marcel Brands, who is making the switch from Dutch champions PSV.

Despite major investment in the squad Everton struggled in the Premier League last season. After a terrible start Ronald Koeman left the club and Allardyce was brought to steady the ship, but Evertonians never took a liking to him and he was relieved of duties earlier this month.

It had long been suspected that Silva was waiting in the wings, and his appointment came as no surprise.

One of his first duties will be to resolve the future of Wayne Rooney, who had become disillusioned under Allardyce and has recently been the subject of a bid by MLS club DC United.

Everton are 7-1 for a top-six Premier League finish next season, 1-3 to make the top ten and 33-1 for relegation.
