The departure of legendary Chelsea manager Emma Hayes last summer might have opened the door for the Blues' title rivals in the Women's Super League.

However, her successor Sonia Bompastor swiftly slammed it shut again, leading Chelsea to their sixth straight WSL crown as part of a domestic treble.

They went through the 22-game league season unbeaten, claiming 60 points from a possible 66, but their Champions League campaign ended with an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the semi-finals.

A star-studded Barca side lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the final, capping a stunning season for Gunners boss Renee Slegers, who had inherited a struggling, injury-hit team in October 2024.

Arsenal will play all of their WSL home fixtures at the Emirates Stadium this season and they have asserted themselves in the transfer market, making Liverpool forward Olivia Smith the first £1 million player in the women's game.

Smith joins an attacking unit including England's Euro 2025 stars Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Beth Mead and Spanish schemer Mariona Caldentey, the WSL Player of the Year last season.

Arsenal are worth backing to knock Chelsea off their perch and they start their campaign against big-spending newcomers London City Lionesses on Saturday.

Chelsea take on Manchester City in Friday's opener and the Citizens are desperate to keep star forwards Khadija Shaw and Vivianne Miedema fit this season.

The champions, likely to be without injured England internationals Lucy Bronze and Lauren James in the early weeks of term, are also missing classy Colombian forward Mayra Ramirez until the new year and can expect a far tougher title battle.

London City have made a splash in the transfer market and are rated 14-1 fifth-favourites to win the league. That will be a tough task for the newcomers, but they could certainly ruffle a few feathers.

The Bromley-based side have signed several high-profile players including Netherlands international Danielle van de Donk and star Italy defender Elena Linari, and were in talks with Paris Saint-Germain to acquire France midfielder Grace Geyoro as Thursday's transfer deadline approached.
