Iceland are slight outsiders for their Group D opener against Belgium at the Women’s Euros, but look to have enough to upset the odds.

Ranked higher by Fifa – albeit just a couple of places – Thorstein Halldorsson’s side are playing well enough to take all three points.

Quarter-finalists in 2013, their one defeat in World Cup qualifying was against the strong Dutch, while two wins out of two against the Czechs has nailed down a playoff spot for the North Atlantic raiders.

They have kept seven clean sheets in their last ten games thanks to a rearguard anchored by Bayern stalwart Glodis Perla Viggosdottir. They also have a highly-rated teenage keeper in Cecilia Runarsdottir.

Lyon’s double Champions League winner Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir provides stardust in midfield while expect big things from another youngster, 21-year-old Sveindis Jonsdottir, part of Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga-winning set-up.

Belgium’s form is definitely patchier. At the Pinatar Cup in the winter they failed to beat Wales and Russia over 90 minutes and they lost warm-up games to England and Austria.

They pose a goal threat from Janice Cayman, Tina de Caigny and Tessa Wullaert, but if Iceland can stifle that trio there isn’t much else.

The second game is in theory, the group decider between France and Italy, although to presume it’s the only game in town would be to insult Iceland and Belgium.

The French have panache and flair, the Italians, all hewn from their own domestic league, have the team spirit and defensive organisation, certainly sufficient to suggest they can keep the score down.
