Preview

Goals were at a premium in England's Euro 2022 opener with Austria on Wednesday but that may not be the case when the Lionesses take on Norway in Brighton in their second group assignment.

England showed a few nerves in their curtain-raiser at a packed Old Trafford but still came away with three points courtesy of Beth Mead's lobbed effort after 16 minutes.

And now they have a win on the board, Sarina Wiegman's side should play more expansively against Norway in a game that looks likely to determine top spot in Group A.

Despite winning only 1-0 against the Austrians, England managed 15 shots in the game and there are multiple dangerous attacking combinations which Wiegman could select for the clash at the Amex.

With Lauren Hemp, Ellen White, Alessia Russo, Ella Toone and Mead just some of the attacking stars at Wiegman's disposal, England are more than capable of racking up the goals and their depth in the final third puts pressure on starters to perform.

In their three pre-tournament friendlies, they scored a total of 12 goals in matches against Belgium (3-0), the Netherlands (5-1) and Switzerland (4-0).

Norway did not hold back in their opener against major-tournament debutants Northern Ireland, establishing a 3-0 advantage after only 31 minutes, before going on to win 4-1.

They managed 11 shots on target in their first match at St Mary's and offered plenty of pace in attack with Amalie Eikeland and Chelsea's Guro Reiten flanking former Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg, who effectively found space in behind the Northern Ireland rearguard.

Norway struck 34 goals in six matches in qualifying for Euro 2022 and both teams have scored in four of their last five fixtures in all competitions.

At a shade of odds-on, that looks a great bet for what should be the standout tie in Group A on the south coast.

Semi-finalists when making their tournament debut at Euro 2017, Austria have arguably an even stronger squad in this year's European Championship and they held their own against England in the tournament opener.

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger put in a shift between the sticks and they are a tough side to break down, which could be bad news for struggling Northern Ireland.

The Green & White Army showed their inexperience against Norway and are expected to record successive defeats with bookmakers rating them as big as 16-1 to win this contest.

Austria came out on top when these teams met as recently as April's World Cup qualifier, winning 3-1, and a bet on the Austrians giving up one goal on the handicap could be the way to go.

The bet is a winner if Austria win by two or more goals, which they have done in six of their last nine games.
