Manchester City won the EFL Cup for the third year in a row but the 1-16 favourites were made to work hard by plucky outsiders Aston Villa at Wembley.

Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock and it looked set to be an easy afternoon when Rodri doubled City's advantage, only for Mbwana Samatta to give Villa hope.

Bjorn Engels hit the post late on as Villa pushed for an equaliser but City held on to claim the first silverware of the season.

Wolves advertised their claims for a Champions League spot with a fine 3-2 win at Tottenham and Wanderers are 4-1 to finish in the Premier League's top four to guarantee a spot at next season's top table.

There was huge confidence behind Wolves, who were backed into favouritism at Spurs, and they twice came from behind with Raul Jimenez bagging the eventual winner.

Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota had earlier cancelled out efforts from Steven Bergwijn and Serge Aurier as Wolves jumped above Tottenham into sixth spot. Spurs are out to 9-1 for a top-four finish.

Goalkeeping errors from David De Gea and Jordan Pickford saw Everton and Manchester United play out a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

United, who equalised via a long-range Bruno Fernandes effort after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had put the Merseysiders in front, are three points behind Chelsea and 11-4 to finish in the top four.
