FFA Cup quarter-finals

Melbourne City rarely disappoint their home supporters and they look favourites worth backing when they host Western Sydney Wanderers in the last eight of the FFA Cup.

The City Blues finished ten points ahead of their visitors in the A-League last season, when they lost just four of their 15 home league games, and their wins in this competition have been convincing.

While the hosts have booked their place in the quarter-finals with victories over Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets, two respected A-League sides, Wanderers have looked ordinary in recording wins at lesser opposition in Hellenic Athletic (4-3) and Bonnyrigg White Eagles (2-1).

A similar scenario played out in this competition 12 months ago when the Western Sydney outfit were dumped out in the last four by Adelaide United having previously taken advantage of a generous draw.

And, with Wanderers limping to success in the early rounds again, a home win should be on the cards.

Markus Babbel’s men were thumped 3-0 on their league trip to Melbourne last season and they won just three of their 15 on the road.

City have the loftier ambitions and should make the most of their class advantage.
