Match previews

After two competitive games this season, RB Leipzig have looked convincing without Timo Werner and can reiterate that they are part of the Bundesliga title race with victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Leipzig's wealth of attacking midfielders such as Emil Forsberg, Marcel Sabitzer and Dani Olmo should be able to compensate for the loss of Werner's goals and the Red Bulls opened the campaign with a 3-1 defeat of Mainz, managing 23 shots and ten on target.

Leverkusen will represent a step up in quality but they were unable to breach Wolfsburg last time out and, in contrast, looked far weaker in the final third without departed stars Kai Havertz and Kevin Volland.

Only Bayern Munich (41) collected more away points than Leipzig (37) last term and Julian Nagelsmann's men look worth a bet.

Valencia suffered a setback in defeat at Celta Vigo last week but started their campaign with a 4-2 home win over rivals Levante and can take maximum points upon their return to the Mestalla against Huesca.

The newly promoted visitors were outplayed in a respectable 1-1 draw with Villarreal in their first match but were downed 2-0 by fellow new boys Cadiz last time out, managing only one shot on target in the match. Given their lack of goalscoring prowess, they should be swerved.

Hellas Verona have had an unusual start to the new Serie A season, drawing their opening game 0-0 with Roma but being awarded with a 3-0 win after the capital club made a registration error with their squad list.

Even though the game itself was goalless, Verona still gave a good account of themselves, looking solid at the back to keep out a Roma outfit who had 21 shots and 61 per cent possession.

Their next assignment pits them against Udinese, who endured an underwhelming 2019-20 campaign, finishing 13th in the standings.

Goals were a problem for Udinese (37) last term with only relegated Brescia (35) and SPAL (27) scoring fewer than them and that deficiency will not be helped by the absence of Leeds target Rodrigo de Paul, who was their second highest scorer with eight goals last season, from the match squad.

They also lost key midfielder Seko Fofana to Lens this summer while defensive midfielder Rolando Mandragora is sidelined and the weakened visitors are worth opposing.
