Betting preview

League Two Newport have carved out a reputation as cup specialists and they will be eyeing another upset when they welcome Premier League Southampton to Rodney Parade.

The Exiles dumped out League One Ipswich at Portman Road in the opening round of this season's EFL Cup and had beaten Watford before taking Newcastle to penalties in last season’s competition.

Michael Flynn’s side have made a solid start to the season, winning three of their four fixtures 1-0, and that defensive discipline should stand them in good stead against the Saints.

With only one point collected from their opening two fixtures and a trip to Newcastle just three days away, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is likely to ring the changes which may lead to a low-scoring contest.

Under 2.5 goals has clicked in 13 of Newport’s last 16 competitive fixtures and that trend may continue here.

The other non-televised EFL Cup clash sees Premier League rivals Newcastle and Burnley do battle at St James’ Park, where both managers are reportedly set to make a number of changes.
