1 Northampton

The Cobblers missed out on automatic promotion on a dramatic final day last season, but that may have worked in their favour. Much will be made of how last season’s best defence has been disrupted by losing goalkeeper Liam Roberts and captain Fraser Horsfall, but manager Jon Brady has replaced wisely. If anything, this is already a deeper squad and Brady has hinted at more business to follow.

2 Mansfield

Teams who fall short in the playoffs tend to fare well in the following campaign and a title charge can be expected from Mansfield, who lost only six of their final 32 games. Nigel Clough has been able to keep his most prized assets while successfully bolstering quality with the arrival of Hiram Boateng and Will Swan. Reports suggest a new striker is also close.
