Man Utd v Chelsea match odds
23-20 Man Utd
5-2 Chelsea
23-10 draw
Man Utd v Chelsea form
Manchester United had a strong pre-season campaign - if that is worth anything - with wins over Perth Glory (2-0), Leeds (4-0), Inter Milan (1-0), Tottenham (2-1) and Kristiansund (1-0) before a 2-2 draw with AC Milan which finished in a shootout success for the Red Devils.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side ended last season poorly, however, with two points from the last five matches to finish sixth, six points and two places behind Chelsea.
A coaching change this summer saw Frank Lampard replace Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge and there have been plenty of goals since Chelsea's record goalscorer returned to the club as manager.
A 1-1 draw at Bohemians was followed by a 4-0 win over St Patrick's. They beat Barcelona 2-1, Reading 4-3 and Red Bull Salzburg 5-3, but needed second-half penalties from Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley to draw 2-2 at Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.
Man Utd v Chelsea team news
Eric Bailly remains sidelined for United. They are likely to hand debuts to defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. Paul Pogba is expected to overcome a minor back problem.
N'Golo Kante is doubtful for Chelsea with Mateo Kovacic standing by to come into midfield. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Antonio Rudiger remain sidelined.
Man Utd v Chelsea tactical battle
There has been a fluidity to United's attacking play in pre-season with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial swapping between the wings and moving into the central striking position.
"We've been working on intensity and pressing," said Solskjaer this summer. "We've got players who like to be on the front foot and we want that to continue."
Lampard briefly looked at a midfield diamond for Chelsea and that appears to be Plan B behind the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation which has seen Abraham start the last two friendlies ahead of World Cup winner Olivier Giroud.
Ross Barkley has been boosted by Lampard arriving, although Mason Mount is another option in the number ten position.
Man Utd v Chelsea verdict
Both Premier League fixtures between United and Chelsea finished in score draws last season and it could be another at Old Trafford with the teams difficult to assess.
United finished last season so poorly that they cannot be trusted, while for Chelsea it will be interesting to see how they cope without Eden Hazard, whose departure for Real Madrid left a massive void.
Those looking for a goalscorer bet may want to consider Barkley, who has notched in Chelsea's last four friendlies. Draw 1-1.
