As a new Premier League season starts a fresh bout of Fantasy Football optimism hits.

It's another chance to win your private league - Racing Post Sport has a league with prizes (more of which later on) - or gain the bragging rights over your friends and family.

Fantasy football forwards

Goals mean points so the forward line looks a decent place to start.

Sergio Aguero has been the go-to man for many years but perhaps last season's gruelling efforts added to a summer Copa America could mean he will be asked to share more time on the pitch with Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling.

Harry Kane picked up a few injuries last season, while fellow big-hitters Alex Lacazette and Roberto Firmino look accurately priced.

Perhaps Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the safest investment for a big-money striker. The Gabon man scored 22 Premier League goals for Arsenal last season and could be set for another high-scoring campaign.

Further down the list Olivier Giroud could be Chelsea's focal point and looks good value at £7m while new boys Che Adams and Sebastien Haller are capable of making a splash at Southampton and West Ham respectively.

Fantasy football midfielders

Mohamed Salah was the top-scoring FPL player last season, recording 259 points, closely followed by Sterling and Sadio Mane and that shows the value of a goalscoring midfielder.

It's pretty baffling that all three aren't listed as forwards and it looks a wise move to accommodate the large transfer fee and have at least one of them in your side.

Elsewhere, Wilfried Zaha, Felipe Anderson and Pedro all look cheap at £7m and bargain hunters should consider Aston Villa duo Jack Grealish and John McGinn as well as Etienne Capoue and Luke Freeman.

Fantasy football defenders

Left-backs Ben Chilwell and Jose Holebas can improve on last season's totals and look better value than high-scorers Matt Doherty, Patrick van Aanholt, Lucas Digne and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Sheffield United man Chris Basham carries a goal threat and looks a cheap pick, as does Joe Gomez should he get the nod alongside Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool. Chelsea's Emerson could be a snip at £5.5m if he is preferred to Marcos Alonso.

Fantasy football goalkeepers

Alisson and Ederson rightly dominate the goalkeeper market after finishing last season on 176 and 169 points respectively but those looking to save cash may prefer Lukasz Fabianski, Kasper Schmeichel, Matt Ryan or Nick Pope.
