200-1 Jordan Henderson now favourite for PFA Player of the Year

But could split Liverpool votes let in Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne?

There have been some surprise winners of the PFA Player of the Year award down the years and judging by an almighty gamble on Jordan Henderson, punters appear to be banking on another one.

The Liverpool captain was a 100-1 shot ante-post and drifted to 200-1 in November. He was still three figures heading into the new year but now Henderson is a best-priced 11-8 and rated an odds-on shot in places.

Henderson seems to have sections of the media behind his push and enhanced his claims with key goals in recent wins over Wolves and Southampton, helping Liverpool to an astonishing Premier League lead and a record of just two points dropped all season.

It's a matter of when not if Henderson becomes the first Liverpool skipper in the Premier League era to lift the top-flight trophy aloft and those on at juicy odds will be delighted with the value of their stock.

However, much of the Merseyside magic comes from the team ethic so brilliantly orchestrated by Jurgen Klopp so it could be one of any number of players selected as the PFA Player of the Year. Or none of them.

Manchester United's historic treble heroes of 1999 famously split the vote, allowing David Ginola of Tottenham to walk away with the award.

Ginola scored seven top-flight goals and helped Spurs to League Cup glory, but Tottenham finished 11th in the Premier League. Yet Ginola somehow also scooped the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year.

Could the same happen with Liverpool? Trent Alexander-Arnold, last year's winner Virgil van Dijk and the fab front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane will all pick up their share of the vote.

If so that may put Kevin De Bruyne, the only player in the betting not playing for the Reds at shorter odds than 33-1, in the picture.

De Bruyne has had a fantastic season anyway despite Manchester City's relative woes, leading the way in assists and key passes.

He can't be blamed for City's defensive ricks nor the missed chances in the final third but De Bruyne is out to 13-2 - the biggest price the brilliant Belgian has been since August as he gets swamped by Liverpool's winning machine.

The champions of the world, Europe and soon enough England are also on course for PFA Player of the Year domination unless De Bruyne does a Ginola.
