Perth boss Tony Popovic has worked wonders to win the Australian club’s first silverware in 15 years but his side will put celebrations on hold as they eye a first A-League Championship.

Glory sealed the Premiers Plate, awarded to the team who finish top of the regular-season table, with two matches to spare after a 1-0 defeat of Newcastle on Sunday.

Their match against Sydney could act as a rehearsal for a potential meeting in the upcoming Finals Series, in which the A-League champions are decided, and they will be keen to flex their goalscoring muscle.

Perth lost the corresponding fixture before beating Sydney 3-1 at home and they are in better shape than their hosts, who are having to juggle their domestic responsibilities with an AFC Champions League campaign.

Reigning A-League champions Sydney have struggled to deal with the loss of last season’s star forward Bobo, who registered 27 league goals in 2018, and a sub-par league campaign has been followed by a series of misfires in continental competition.

They are in poor form, having failed to win any of their four group matches, and they were unable to beat Melbourne City and Western Sydney Wanderers either side of a laboured win against Melbourne Victory.

Sydney had to settle for second best in the league standings and they may have to do so again when they square up with Perth at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
