African World Cup qualifying
BT Sport 1, 5pm Friday

Nigeria have not lost a World Cup qualifier since 2004 and the Super Eagles look worth backing at 17-20 to make it nine points out of nine in African Group B by beating Cameroon.

Nigeria beat Algeria 3-1 in Uyo last November, when John Obi Mikel netted in the middle of a Victor Moses brace, after opening up with a 2-1 success in Zambia. Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho gave them a cushion in Ndola.

The Super Eagles’ form has been patchy in Cup of Nations qualifiers, the African Conference and friendlies since including a home defeat to South Africa in June. But it is hard to ignore that they have triumphed in 24 of the 32 World Cup qualifiers since a 2-1 reverse in Angola with 13 wins out of 16 at home.

They also beat the Indomitable Lions 3-0 in a Uyo friendly in October 2015 with Efe Ambrose, Moses Simon and Odion Ighalo netting.

The outcome of this clash is unlikely to be as clearcut though.

Cameroon have drawn both their qualifying group games 1-1 – all four goals coming in the first half – and their only away defeats since losing in Uyo have been to France in a 2016 friendly and to Chile and Germany in this June’s Confederations Cup.

Earlier this month, they claimed two 2-0 wins over San Tome in the Conference.
