Sunday's European preview

Nice v Clermont

Marseille's 5-2 win over Angers on Friday took them into second place in Ligue 1 but Nice should be backed to regain the lead in the race to finish as best of the rest behind Paris St-Germain.

Christophe Galtier's men host Clermont on Sunday and look an appealing price to cover a one-goal handicap against a side who have sustained some heavy defeats on the road this season.

Clermont were beaten 4-0 at PSG and Monaco and hammered 6-0 at Rennes so they may struggle to stand firm against a Nice side who have won their last five matches in Ligue 1.

Confidence in the Nice camp was further boosted by Monday's French Cup tie against PSG in which they came through on penalties after a goalless draw.

They needed two late goals to win November's reverse fixture against Clermont 2-1 but look primed for a more straightforward success on the Riviera.

Real Betis v Villarreal

Real Betis are enjoying a terrific 2021-22 campaign domestically and in the Europa League, and Manuel Pellegrini's side can strengthen their position in La Liga's top four with a home win over poor travellers Villarreal.

Betis have won their last two league games handsomely, beating Alaves 4-0 and Espanyol 4-1, and they continued in a similar vein in the Copa del Rey this week, winning 4-0 at Real Sociedad in Thursday's quarter-final.

Their attacking threat makes them solid favourites to take three points against a Villarreal side who have won only one of their ten away matches in La Liga, scoring just seven times on the road.

The Yellow Submarine are also in the hunt for a European place but their last away trip ended in a 1-0 defeat at lowly Elche and five of their eight wins have come at home to teams in the bottom eight.

Betis, with striker Willian Jose supported by in-form attacking midfielders Juanmi, Sergio Canales and Nabil Fekir, are operating at a far higher level than that and could prove too hot for their visitors to handle.
