Edinburgh City eyeing historic promotion

Edinburgh City look ready to build on last season's title challenge and win their first promotion since entering the Scottish League three years ago.

The capital club won 12 games on the bounce in all competitions last season, before a late collapse cost them the title and they lost to Clyde in the playoffs.

But they appear well-equipped to learn from that experience this time around and are good value to win the fourth tier of Scottish football. They have kept the core of their squad together and boast the best player in the league in Blair Henderson, who netted 30 league goals last season.

James McDonaugh's side have impressed in the Betfred Cup too and they look a solid shout.

Cove Rangers are expected to run them close after their Highland League romp and playoff hammering of hapless Berwick Rangers. Despite being new to the division there is plenty of confidence behind them which has seen them pushed into favouritism.

But it's a big ask in their first full season and there's a difference between battering the likes of Fort William and Strathspey Thistle to picking up points at Queen's Park and Stenhousemuir.

Elgin City look a really attractive outside bet. They've managed to bring back prodigal son Shane Sutherland to Borough Briggs and Russell Dingwall is also an eye-catching addition.

There doesn't appear to be any teams out their depth this season and the other seven teams are very closely matched.

Brechin City will be desperate to avoid a third relegation on the bounce and Albion Rovers and Stirling Albion could face another struggle towards the bottom of the league.

That leaves Annan Athletic, Queen's Park, Cowdenbeath and Stenhousemuir all pushing for a playoff berth.
