Scottish football preview

Celtic and Rangers discovered their Champions League opponents on Thursday but the anticipation of European trips to the Bernabeu and Anfield will have to take a back seat for now.

The Old Firm clubs are in domestic action this weekend with Rangers at home to Ross County on Saturday and Celtic away to Dundee United in front of the Sky Sports a day later.

Gers, who secured their first Champions League group-stage appearance in 12 years with victory over PSV Eindhoven this week, will go top if they beat Ross, although it could be only temporary given the Bhoys are 1-6 to maintain their perfect start to the season and the fact that Dundee United have shipped 14 goals in their last three matches.

It’s second against first in League One on Saturday afternoon as Dunfermline host Airdrie, and the visitors are taken to claim all three points.

Defensively these two have been peerless – Dunfermline have kept five straight clean sheets and Airdrie four out of five.

At the other end of the pitch, however, there’s a bluntness about the Pars that doesn’t offer much hope.

Airdrie, on the other hand, are carving out chances galore – frontman Calum Gallagher has notched four in his last three – and that might just be the difference.

Cove Rangers look unrecognisable from the side who won the League One title last term and the Toonsers are hard to fancy at Queen’s Park after three straight defeats in the Championship.

Owen Coyle’s Spiders have scored the first goal in all four league matches they have played this term, winning the last two against Partick Thistle and Arbroath.

Cove, in contrast, have won one of their last seven and aren’t playing well.
