Wolves vs Liverpool preview

For most of this season, the only thing better than playing Wolves would have been playing Wolves twice – as Liverpool do in the Premier League and FA Cup this week.

However, Rob Edwards' men merit respect after a run of competitive performances, culminating in Friday's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Molineux.

Beating Villa is always a cause for celebration for Wolves fans and that win also took them past the 2007-08 Derby side's infamous record of 11 Premier League points.

Wolves's previous home fixture was also a memorable occasion as they came from 2-0 down to take a point off leaders Arsenal.

Wanderers held Nottingham Forest to a goalless draw before conceding a decisive 90th-minute goal at Crystal Palace in their last two away matches and they are unlikely to roll over against Liverpool.

The Reds have won four of their last five league matches and the exception was the dramatic 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City in which they led until the 84th minute.

Arne Slot's men coasted to a 5-2 home win over West Ham on Saturday but they had to show their gritty side on their last two away trips.

Virgil van Dijk's second-half header inflicted a first home league defeat of the season on Sunderland and Alexis Mac Allister struck in the seventh minute of injury-time to secure another 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool won the reverse fixture against Wolves 2-1 just after Christmas and they may have to grind out victory at Molineux.

Their improved set-piece threat and a run of four clean sheets in five on the road should encourage favourite-backers.

But 11 of Wolves's 13 league defeats since the start of November featured under 3.5 goals, including a 2-1 loss at leaders Arsenal and a 2-0 reverse at Manchester City.

Mac Allister could be Liverpool's shooting star again

Mac Allister had a fortuitous effort against Forest disallowed for handball shortly before his late winner at the City Ground and he also scored with one of his three shots against West Ham.

The Liverpool midfielder has had at least one attempt in 12 of his last 13 league outings – the exception was January's goalless stalemate at Arsenal – and he is a nice price to have two or more shots at Molineux.

Mosquera may struggle to stay out of trouble against Reds

Yerson Mosquera was the first player booked in Friday's win over Villa and the Wolves centre-back may well repeat the feat against Liverpool.

He has picked up nine yellow cards in 18 league starts this season and was also cautioned in last month's 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory at Grimsby.

Half-time draw

Wolves have been level at half-time in 14 of their 29 Premier League matches this season and their last five games in all competitions featured only one first-half goal.

Virgil van Dijk to have one or more shots

The Liverpool captain has been a consistent threat from set-pieces in recent weeks, scoring in three of his last six league appearances.

Joao Gomes to be booked

Wolves have plenty of likely card candidates including tough-tackling midfielder Joao Gomes, who has been booked in four of his last eight league matches at Molineux.
