The Hammers are five points adrift of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest after 18 games and 11 behind Brighton.
The Seagulls had hoped to compete for a European place this season but a recent dip in form has seen them fall off the pace.

West Ham vs Brighton preview
A December slump has seen Brighton drop down to 13th in Premier League, a position their final opponents of the year, West Ham, would be ecstatic about.
Albion are without a win in five this month but the fact they have faced Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sunderland and Arsenal in that time should act as a small crumb of comfort for Seagulls supporters.
Brighton were held to a goalless draw by West Ham in their other December outing, but the Hammers are without a win in seven and have yet to gain any real impetus under Nuno Espirito Santo, especially at the London Stadium.
Only Wolves have a worse home record than the Hammers and a trip to the capital should hold no fear for Brighton, who are unbeaten on their last eight visits to east London.
Nuno's men have lost seven of their nine league games in front of their own fans and it won't take much for the West Ham faithful to voice their dismay should Albion establish a foothold on Tuesday night.
At 6-5, Brighton look more than a fair price to end the year on a high.
West Ham vs Brighton Bet Builder
Jarrod Bowen over 1.5 shots on target
The West Ham captain has registered six shots on target in his last five games and, with Brighton struggling at the back, Bowen could steer at least two shots on target for the third time in six outings.
Yasin Ayari over 1.5 shots
The Swede has made the most of his first-team opportunity in recent weeks and has done everything to try and get his name on the scoresheet. He has fired nine shots at goal in two appearances and he should be able to register two shots for the fourth time in five appearances.
Lucas Paqueta over 0.5 fouls
The Brazilian has conceded 26 fouls this season, nine of which have come in his last five appearances. With Brighton's midfield full of attacking flair, Paqueta will do well to avoid trouble.
