Match preview

Manchester United's hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League are hanging in the balance after Wednesday's 3-1 loss at home to Paris St-Germain, but the Red Devils are on a three-game winning sequence in the Premier League and they can keep it going by defeating West Ham at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have also won their last three games to climb to fifth in the table and will receive the backing of up to 2,000 spectators.

Any vocal support should be beneficial but West Ham manager David Moyes has a few tactical problems to solve after his team struggled for large parts of their 2-1 success at home to Aston Villa on Monday, losing the shot count 16 to six.

Moyes felt the need to make a double substitution at the break, replacing Michail Antonio and Arthur Masuaku with Said Benrahma and Sebastien Haller, and he was quickly rewarded by Jarrod Bowen's 46th-minute goal which edged the Hammers in front for the second time.

However, West Ham's second-half performance was as unconvincing as the first and they scraped over the the line with the help of a tight VAR offside call which ruled out an injury-time goal from Ollie Watkins.

The three points were received gratefully by Moyes but his team will need to play a lot better if they are to finish in the top half, let alone compete for a place in Europe.

Disciplined defence has been a regular feature for West Ham, who have conceded just 11 goals in ten league games.

But they may struggle to cope with United, who have started to play with more confidence and should not be too disheartened by the reverse to PSG, who were Champions League finalists in August.

Manchester United have conceded the first goal in all four of their Premier League away games this season but have won the lot and are the only team in the division with a 100 per cent record on their travels.

Of the away successes, the 3-2 victory at Brighton stands out as by far the least convincing.

However, the Red Devils were dominant for large parts of their wins at Newcastle (4-1) and Everton (3-1) and showed tremendous character and quality to recover from a two-goal defecit in last Sunday's fully deserved 3-2 success at Southampton.

It was a superb second-half showing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who made Southampton look as ordinary as they have all season.

They go into the weekend just five points behind leaders Tottenham with a game in hand and can reduce that gap to two by Saturday night, giving them the perfect pick-me-up before next Tuesday's decisive clash away to RB Leipzig.

Key stat

Manchester United have won their last eight Premier League away games.
