Jose Mourinho is not a universally popular appointment as Tottenham's new manager but the decision has received the thumbs-up from punters as Spurs aim to end their trophy drought.

Mourinho had not even been pictured holding the Spurs shirt aloft before bookmakers started slashing Tottenham, who last tasted success in the 2008 League Cup, to win the FA Cup.

A previous best 10-1 is in to 8-1, while Betway are 15-2 about the north London outfit lifting a trophy this term.

Europe offers a second, more difficult, path to success. Mourinho has won the Champions League with Porto and Inter and is 33-1 to do likewise with Spurs this season. But last term's finalists are struggling to stay in the race for the top four at home as they sit stranded in 14th spot, 11 Premier League points off the fourth spot that would see them qualify for next year's competition.

That has not stopped Spurs from being backed to haul back that deficit and Mourinho's men are 7-2 to finish in the top four. The odds suggest they are more likely candidates than Arsenal or Mourinho's former club Manchester United, who are 5-4 with bet365 to finish above 4-7 Tottenham.

Spurs will need to get on a roll, starting with Saturday's London derby at West Ham.

To continue a theme, Tottenham have been slashed across the board for maximum points at the London Stadium and they are now 17-20 to bank three points. They will also play Bournemouth (home), United (away), Burnley (home), Wolves (away) and Chelsea (home) in the Premier League before Christmas.

Betway offer 15-2 that Spurs do the league double over Chelsea and BoyleSports go 5-1 for Tottenham to claim maximum points in their double-header with United. Those who fancy Mourinho to get off to a flyer can get 33-1 with bet365 about Tottenham winning their next six top-flight fixtures.

Mourinho will presumably want to make changes to the squad in January and is 7-2 with Paddy Power to sign Nemanja Matic, who was a mainstay for the Portuguese at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford. It's 8-1 he keeps his powder dry in the window.

A contract was signed until the end of the 2022-23 season, but Mourinho is 2-1 with Coral to last the distance and 1-3 to depart before that date and few fancy him to hang around for as long as Mauricio Pochettino.

Coral and Ladbrokes rate United as the 11-4 favourite to be Pochettino's next club from 3-1 Bayern Munich. Previous suitors Real Madrid are 7-2 and Pochettino is 7-1 to head to Paris St-Germain.
