Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest predictions
The pressure on Ange Postecoglou was eased massively on Thursday as he led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt to reach the Europa League semi-finals.
Spurs are now the 4-1 favourites for that competition and, given their lowly position in the Premier League, the Australian could be forgiven for switching his attention solely to ending the Lilywhites’ trophy drought in a last-ditch attempt to save his job.
Ironically, the Europa League has been partly to blame for their dreadful league form and Tottenham’s results immediately following European outings make for very ugly reading.
Spurs have lost six, drawn two and won just three of their games following a Europa League clash. The victories came against bottom-half teams Brentford, Southampton and Manchester United and even though they have had an extra day to recover than normal, they look set for a tough time against Nottingham Forest.
Former Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo has worked wonders this season, taking Forest, who were 17th last term, to top-four contenders this time, and he will be eager to snap a two-game losing streak by completing the double against his one-time employers.
Admittedly, Forest were in far better nick when winning the reverse fixture 1-0 but their back-to-back defeats have come against two of the league’s most in-form sides, Aston Villa and Everton, and they should fare far better against a Spurs side who have lost four of their last six league games.
Chris Wood made his return from injury against Everton and didn’t quite rediscover his previous form. However, nine days off will have helped and Forest’s talismanic striker should be back to his best in north London.
Following their first leg against Frankfurt, Spurs looked disjointed and tired when losing 4-2 at Wolves last weekend – a defeat which marked their 17th in the league – and it could be the same story after Thursday’s victory in the second.
It is now win the Europa League or bust for Postecoglou, and he may start resting some key men in the league as a result, especially after their exploits in Frankfurt.
Nuno will not follow suit. Forest had looked nailed-on for third but their two losses, coupled with an upturn in form from Newcastle, has seen them lose their lead over the chasing pack.
Aston Villa’s win over Newcastle moved them level on points with Forest while Manchester City’s victory at Everton means they are now ahead of Forest, making Monday’s trip to north London of paramount importance.
The visitors will name a strong side at Tottenham as they bid to get their Champions League dream back on track and the Tricky Trees will be fired-up while Tottenham's’ focus may lie elsewhere and. It could be another night to forget for the home crowd.
